What We Do:  School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport, Inc. (SVA) is a non-profit organization that provides volunteer services to Bridgeport's Public Schools.  SVA recruits, trains and places volunteers and also raises funds to support programs for city students.

Mission:  The mission of the SVA is to enrich and support the learning of Bridgeport's public school students through the involvement of volunteers from Bridgeport and surrounding communities.

Reading Enrichment:  Volunteers read aloud to classes on a weekly, semi-monthly or monthly basis, using books provided by the School Volunteer Association.  The time commitment is about 30 minutes.
Book Buddies:  The "Book Buddy" listens to a child read for 10 minutes, giving help as needed.  The teacher will provide a book that is appropriate and comfortable for the child's independent reading level.  A "Book Buddy" may be done in combination with reading aloud to the class.
Reading Tutors:    Reading tutors work with students on a one-to-one or small group basis, under the guidance of a teacher who can provide direction and materials to reinforce reading skills.  A commitment of one hour a week is ideal for this position.
Math Tutors:  Math tutors work with students on a one-to-one or small group basis helping students with such things as telling time, money skills, computation and problem solving.  Volunteers do not have to be math experts but simply help the students under the guidance of the teacher.  Commitment of one hour a week is ideal for this position.
Mentors:  Mentors are paired with students in grades 3-8.  The objective is to be a consistent, caring adult in the life of the child.  One hour each week is requested.  As this is a school-based program, mentor/mentee pairs typically meet at lunchtime and eat, play games and work on schoolwork or projects.  Background checks are done for new mentors, and there is a 2 hour training session to help them get started.  Occasional meetings are held during the school year for information an fun activities.
