A Graduation Surprise from Dr. Ramos and the Broad Foundation
Dr. Ramos will announce the 2008 Broad Foundation scholarship recipients. Shhhhhhhhhhh it's a surprise.
Thirteen Bridgeport high school seniors have won a collective $125,000 in Broad Prize college scholarships, the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.  Students in Bridgeport Public Schools (BPS) received the scholarships because the district was a finalist for the 2007 Broad Prize for Urban Education.

The nation’s largest education award given to school districts, the $1 million Broad Prize honors large urban districts that have demonstrated the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement in the nation while reducing achievement gaps among ethnic groups and between high- and low-income students.  As a finalist for the 2007 Broad Prize, BPS received $125,000 in scholarships for 2008 graduating seniors.

“We are proud to support these Broad Prize scholars in their pursuit of college,” said Eli Broad, founder of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, a national education philanthropy based in Los Angeles . “These students have worked hard and it has paid off – they have improved their grades over the course of high school, and we look forward to their success in college.

In honor of longtime City educator Jettie S. Tisdale, a new elementary school in Bridgeport ’s East End was named at a ribbon cutting and dedication of the school on June 8th.

Bridgeport Board of Education President Maximino Medina, Jr., and Superintendent of Schools John J. Ramos made opening remarks. “We want our students to not only know the name Jettie Tisdale but, to also know the story behind the name and our teachers will share that story,” Dr. Ramos.

Also in attendance were Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, Senator Christopher Shays, and City Councilmen Andre F. Baker, Jr., and James Holloway. Each shared a few remarks on the legacy of the late Jettie Tisdale.

Teachers and former students who were inspired by Tisdale shared their personal experiences with the educator. “She was on a mission,” stated Peggy Moales, former student and now the first lady of Prayer Tabernacle Church of Love   in Bridgeport . “Her mission was children.”

For more than forty years, Jettie Tisdale was a school teacher and principal in both Bridgeport and Virginia . At Whittier and Wilbur Cross Schools she began as a science teacher, and then continued as a guidance counselor at Read Middle and Harding High Schools . Following her experiences at these schools, she became principal at Maplewood , Newfield, McKinley, and Longfellow Schools . She retired from the school system in 2002 and passed away of heart failure in May 2004.
To commemorate Tisdale’s spirit and dedication, Maya Angelou’s famous poem, “Still I Rise” was read in her honor by 6th grader Anatasha Machuca. They also honored the late educator with musical selections from the Jettie Tisdale School Chorus as well as a drum and dance presentation by Tunisi’s Compound.

Family, Friends and staff pay tribute.

Tisdale is survived by husband Charles B. Tisdale, Executive Director of Action for Bridgeport Community Development, and daughter Stacey, who is a financial reporter and author. “I am very honored that this new school will be named after my wife. Jettie’s life was centered on children,” said Charles Tisdale. “Jettie worked very hard to serve the children of this community and her legacy lives on in this new school.” Stacey Tisdale stated, "This school stands as a testament to the fact somebody who came from very humble beginnings, with only hope and belief in themselves can become anything.”

Jettie S. Tisdale is gone but, not forgotten.....

The school is located at 250 Hollister Avenue in Bridgeport.
