The University of Bridgeport (UB) Student Center was booming with excitement and scientific talent on Wednesday as the Bridgeport Public Schools hosted its annual Science Expo.  The expo featured over 150 projects from the 7th – 12th grade winners of each school-based science fair. The top four juniors, as selected by Science Expo judges, were awarded $12,000 scholarships to UB.  This year’s UB scholarship winners are Rebecka Mraz, Emilia Ortega, Phylicia Mitchell, and Jessica Hart.  Upon the students’ acceptance to UB, the scholarships will award each winner $12,000 per year for four years.

Students first participated in the school science fairs, then the winners from each individual school moved on to the district’s exposition.  Students’ creative projects varied in style and area of study, including in-depth research into the water cycle, plant and animal life, floating eggs, solar ovens, the flexibility of cookies, and the difference between male and female emotions. First Place, Second Place, Third Place, and Honorable Mention awards were presented for each grade level.

“As usual, the students have done an amazing job,” said Aresta Thompson, Director of Science for Bridgeport Public Schools.  “Every year they outdo themselves.  The projects look phenomenal.”

Bridgeport’s talented scientists were excited to participate in the Expo.  “This fair is really cool,” said Laurin Lee, a Winthrop eighth grader whose project featured her finding on how body fat affects one’s heart rate after exercising.  “I discovered that I really like science.  Now I’ve decided that I want to go to Aquaculture School next year to explore all the different types of science.”  Fellow Winthrop eighth grader Laura London, who featured her project on flexibility, agreed. “I’m really excited to have this experience and to be chosen as one of the only people from my school to be here,” she said.  “It’s also fun to see all of the other projects.”

Superintendent Dr. John J. Ramos was in attendance to share his sentiments will all the participants.  “I can’t tell you how impressed I am with all of these projects.  The quality of your work blows me away,” he told students. “Even if you don’t get a prize, you are all winners.”

Jessica Sikora and Tyler Hawkins, Aquaculture seniors and project partners, were mostly concerned with the judging process. “I have to admit, I’m extremely nervous about the judging. But this is a great experience,” Jessica said.  “This has been a great hands-on experience where we get to show everyone our hard work,” Tyler added.   Their project on clam growth won Third Place in the 12th Grade Division.  Jessica hopes to major in environmental science at the University of Vermont and Tyler is in the process of applying to the Coast Guard Academy.

For other students, feelings of excitement outweighed those of nervousness.  “We were so excited to find out we won.  Our hearts dropped,” explained UB scholarship winner Rebecka Mraz.  Rebecka and her partner Emilia’s project, “Male vs. Female Emotions,” won First Place in the 11th Grade Division.

The UB scholarships were given by Bryan Gross, UB Assistant Dean of Admissions, who was responsible for securing the scholarships.  Gross also served as a judge for the 8th Grade Division.  “I think it is really important for people to know that the University of Bridgeport cares about the young people in our community.  This expo is a great opportunity for us to encourage students to do their best and to make a difference in their lives while showing them that their work goes noticed,” he said.  Gross was also impressed with all of the students.  “The effort of all the projects was great.  It is nice to see the students’ enthusiasm,” he added.

The winners of the Science Expo 2008 will participate in the State Fair, which will be held on March 11 at Quinnipiac University.

Bridgeport community. Christian's project on grooves in CDs
and DVDs won 3rd Place.
