Last month, 200 third, fourth, and fifth grade Bridgeport students participated in a Math/Science Summer Enrichment Program at High Horizons and Multicultural Magnet Schools.
The program was designed to provide students with a variety of fun activities that promote an interest and enthusiasm for learning about mathematics and science. It also encouraged students to discover how to solve real-life problems using logical mathematics and reasoning abilities by means of science laboratories and computer technology.
The following are students’ feedback on their experiences in the Math/Science Summer Enrichment Program:
“I had a lot of fun dissecting a clam in Mr. Bell’s class. However, it was a little frightening. But it was something I’d like to experience again!”
~Tatyana, Grade 5
“My favorite experience here at camp was learning about our solar system and the nine planets that it consists of. I enjoyed learning about the planet in which I live. Learning is fun!”
~Donna Marie, Grade 5
“I liked learning about ratios, and I really loved making math cubes.
Mrs. Beres really knows how to make class fun. This program rocks!”
~Sandra, Grade 5
“My favorite experience was the seed experiment because there were many different ways to find out which seeds would grow faster in a different condition or environment.”
~Ashley, Grade 3
“My favorite activity was the water molecule mobile because I learned what makes up water.”
~Samantha, Grade 3
“I enjoyed coconut math because it was fun and I learned about exponents and decimals.”
~Fahim, Grade 4
“My favorite experience was growing plants in bottles because I learned about the water cycle inside a bottle."
Program objectives were closely aligned with the mathematics and science curricula, along with identified areas of weakness on the Mastery Test.
