Marin Students “Read to Achieve”

Luis Munoz Marin School Students “Read to Achieve”

On May 3, students at Luis Munoz Marin School took reading and learning to a new level as they participated in Read to Achieve, a program sponsored by Cabelvision and the New York Knicks.

Jerome and Johnnie Williams presented the program.  Jerome Williams is a recently retired NBA player from the New York Knicks and executive producer of a TV show and a series of social documentaries. His brother Johnnie is an international speaker and youth program development specialist. The two have been visiting schools both nationally and abroad for the past 10 years, having reached more that one million students. This is the third year that the program has been brought to Luis Munoz Marin School.

The day’s theme was “I Can Change the World.”  Prior to the assembly, Jerome and Johnnie Williams visited classrooms around the school to discuss how students can help change the world and how school plays an important role in success. A variety of interactive activities were planned, including a “Positive Lyric Concert,” in which the Williams’ brothers and guests perform songs from the Williams’ motivational CD.  Students learned about the importance of working hard, reaching for your dreams, being yourself and making the right choices.  Johnnie Williams noted that “the majority of the problems in the world today are man-made,” and that each person is responsible for making the right choices that will change the world and lead to a happier, successful life.

“The Read to Achieve program offers students an energetic, motivational assembly that focuses on positive behavior and changing our world,” said Mary Beth Williamson, Literary Coach at Luis Munoz Marin School. “We are grateful to Cablevision, The New York Knicks and Johnnie Williams for providing our students with this wonderful opportunity.”

For the Williams brothers, this program is part of a new international student movement to “Change the World.” For more information on this movement, visit www.changetheworldmovement.org.

Harding's Habitat Club Thanks Supporters

Thank you so much to everyone who supported Warren Harding High School’s Habitat for Humanity trip to Georgetown County, South Carolina over the spring break.

Eleven students and 2 teachers volunteered their spring break helping out four families in Georgetown, SC.  Throughout the week, the group painted the inside of a home, insulated another home, landscaped the yard including creating flower beds for the front of the new houses, and built lasting relationships.  It was a great week for everyone involved.  The group had nightly team meetings where they discussed the issues of poverty and had time for personal reflections.  They were all welcomed into the community of Georgetown warmly and openly.

Junior Penord Beason (pictured painting the walls) remarked, “I enjoyed working with others knowing that what I was doing down there was going to make a difference in South Carolina.”

Senior Katiria Vilar said, "It was a learning experience. I'm glad that I got the opportunity to meet and work with Shanieka and Bridget (our homeowners) and make a difference in their lives."

Congratulations to the Harding High School Habitat Spring Break Team 2007:
