MCM Named Academic Gain Award Finalist
The Lone Pine Foundation, Inc. recently announced that Multicultural Magnet School has been named a finalist school in the first annual Fairfield County Academic Gain Award. According to the Lone Pine Foundation, Inc., a Connecticut-based private foundation which seeks to break the cycle of poverty through education, “The Award is designed to acknowledge elementary schools that have made the greatest academic gain in student achievement, to create incentive for other schools to work toward significant academic gains, and to foster the sharing of the best practices used by high achieving schools.”
As a finalist school, every full-time MCM employee during the 2006-07 school academic year received $250. “The entire staff is walking around with a little more spring and broad smiles,” said MCM Principal Marina Pèrez Taverner. In addition, the school received $500 which, according to Principal Taverner, may be used to buy a pine tree to commemorate the award. The school also plans to use the funds to purchase a Blue Ribbon sign outsided the school to commemorate the school’s No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Award.
“It is so unusual in our business to receive a monetary reward for doing a good job and working hard. We all come to school everyday to make a difference in our students' lives. It's never about the money. It's all about service to kids and our society,” said Taverner. “On the other hand, it's always nice to have a little extra cash. More importantly, it's wonderful to feel appreciated for a job well done! Our entire staff has worked very hard over the years. They deserve the recognition, as does every hard working school staff in Bridgeport and beyond our borders.”
Congratulations to Multicultural Magnet School for this great accomplishment.
DonorsChoose to Help Public School Teachers

This article appeared in the November 7th edition of the Westport News.
Fairfield County is one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, and it's a fact in which many area residents take great pride because of what that wealth means for the prosperity of the communities in which they live.
But there's always the lingering knowledge that Fairfield County also has some of the poorest urban areas in the state, Bridgeport and Stamford; nearby New Haven and Hartford are among the poorest cities in the nation. The cities' lack of funds translates directly to their schools, which are, not coincidentally, among the most populous in the state. The result is overpopulated classrooms and underpaid teachers without enough resources. However, now available to Connecticut public schools, Donors Choose.org has provided an innovative and easy way to address this problem.
