Members of the Board of Education, students, parents, sponsors and community leaders will come together on Wednesday, March 19th at Recital Hall at the Bernhard Center for a special screening of the “Great Expectations” television show.

“Great Expectations” is a 30-minute program with a nice blend of teacher/student profiles, a parent chat, principle’s corner, plus special commentary by the Superintendent. “Television is a powerful medium and we are excited about Great Expectations and the opportunity to promote some of the great things happening in and around our schools. The concept is a part of the district’s strategic plan and we appreciate all the partners who helped to make this possible,” commented Dr. John J. Ramos.  The show is made possible by a generous contribution from the Bridgeport Public Education Fund. “Great Expectations features Bridgeport students, teachers, parents and community leaders. It’s a fast paced, informative news magazine program and a must see, everyone can be proud of,” said Marge Hiller, Executive Director of the Bridgeport Education Fund.

“Great Expectations” is hosted by Bassick High School students Ahlaam Abdul and Justin Flores. Harding High Students, Dasheena Kenney and Rondique McLean accompanied by Gina LeVon Simpson of the Parent Center.

This week watch “Great Expectations” to learn more about Hernan Illingworth, the President of the District Parent Advisory Council. Illingworth is featured using his leadership skills and passion to assist parents throughout the district. Show producer Frank Borres of Borres Productions also utilizes the students to assist in the production of the show. “Bridgeport Public School students are extremely talented and I wanted to highlight that talent in front of the camera and behind the scenes,” said Frank Borres, Producer of “Great Expectations”.

The show is scheduled to air on Thursday, March 20th on the Education Access Channel 78, mornings at 9 a.m. and evenings at 9 p.m., except Wednesdays. Plus you can catch “Great Expectations” on Channel 77 (Public Access) every Tuesday at 10 p.m.

Poster contest promotes exercise and healthy living

Peter Barnaba, High Horizon Magnet - Grand Prize Winner!

The rainy weather last weekend didn’t keep hundreds of parents, students and teachers away from the annual Poster Art Exhibit held at Sacred Heart University, sponsored by Links Incorporated of Fairfield County. This year’s theme: “Project Walking Fete: Make Health a Habit”, was highlighted by student artwork from throughout the district.

18 Schools participated and all the students were winners but, it was High Horizon Magnet School student Peter Barnaba who took home the grand prize, a $500 scholarship and the chance to compete at the Eastern Area Director of Links, Incorporated. This isn’t the first major prize for Barnaba. He was also one of the students chosen to ride to school in style on the first day along with Superintendent Dr. Ramos and Chief of Staff, Robert Henry, as a part of the back to school campaign. “I am very excited about winning this contest. I love to draw and take part in events like this,” said Peter Barnaba. Peter’s mom was also there to cheer her son on and encourage his creativity.

Other winners included: Seth Herniquez, Crystal Vu, and Wally Wason, all students at Park City Magnet and Sean Vargas, Classical Studies Academy.

“The poster art contest celebrates walking and is a child-centered art project designed to encourage teaching the importance of lifetime physical activity,” commented Geraldine Floyd, Poster Art Chair. Dr. Arnold Zuckerman, Podiatrist, Dr. Marian A. Evans, the city’s Health Department Director, Deborah Elam, President of the Fairfield County Chapter of Links, Geraldine Johnson, former Superintendent of schools and Veronica Douglas-Givan, Director of Communications from the Board of Education, were all on hand to bring greetings and to inspire the students to continue to use their creativity, while sending a positive message.

Theme such as: “Stay away from fries get your exercise” from a student from McKinley and “Start walking and talking and see the results” written by a student from Barnum, lined the walls, along with unique art work bringing awareness to the student’s vision of a healthy life style.

Contest judges included: Valeria Cooper, owner Picture That Gallery, LLC. Dr. Georgia Faye Day, Owner - Rainy Faye Bookstore, Rev. Takayuki Ishii, Senior Pastor, Golden Hill United Methodist Church, Michele Peloso and Lisa Nelson.

The day ended with a healthy lunch provided and served by the ladies of Links Incorporated.
