First graders jump-start reading with First Day enrichment program

Guest reader Superintendent Dr. Ramos shows off the new First Day book selection with Mrs. Robinson's first grade class at Dunbar School.

Bridgeport first graders started the new school year with free books and guest readers.  On Tuesday, the Bridgeport Public Education Fund held its 12th annual First Day reading enrichment.  This year, 2,500 copies of the book Is There Really a Human Race?, written by Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell, were purchased for first grade students in 30 Bridgeport public schools, the Six to Six Regional Magnet School, and New Beginnings charter school.

About 120 First Day volunteers read the new book throughout the 99 first grade classrooms.  The mains goals of First Day are:
  • To increase the number of children, especially first     grade students who come to school on the first day.  Only the students who attended school on the first day received the book.
  • To congratulate the first grade students on learning to read and to provide more books for them to own.
  • To increase the number of people from the Bridgeport community who visit a public school in Bridgeport and become volunteers.
“This was a great First Day. Everyone including teachers, volunteers, and particularly the students loved our book selection,” said Marge Hiller, Executive Director of the Bridgeport Public Education Fund.  “It was terrific to watch the children print their names on the book plate and try to find ‘what they wanted to be when they grew up’ from the pictures on the back cover.”

Celebrity guest readers included Superintendent Dr. John J. Ramos and Mayor Fabrizi.  Community volunteer Dolly McBroom, member of Church Women United, is a long-time volunteer who has been reading at McKinley and Dunbar for 16 years.  “She is a Bridgeport treasure,” Hiller said.  Guest readers encouraged students to reach for their goals and make a difference.  “One of our volunteers asked if all the students would do all they could to make the world a better place and to always help someone,” Hiller added. “The students readily promised they would.”  Thank you to all of the volunteers who made the First Day a success.
