Central Prepares for BotballCentral Magnet junior Ashley Gaie recently attended a two-day Botball workshop at UMass, Lowell as part of the Botball Educational Robotics Program, which integrates science, technology, engineering, and math with robotics. The workshop served as a kick-off to an annual Botball robotics challenge. Educators and team leaders learned about current robotics technology and received information about the upcoming Botball New England Tournament on April 5.
“I truly enjoyed this workshop. I learned the basics of Botball programming and mechanical engineering. We had a lot of hands-on activities where we built our own demo robots,” Ashley said. “I was thinking about a career in either engineering or programming and found this competition to be a very interesting learning experience.”
Ashley, one of the captains for Central’s Engineering Club, is in her second year on the Botball team. Since the completion of the Botball workshop, Ashley’s team has until April to construct a robot that works autonomously without human communication and solely through computer programming. The team robot will then compete against other student-built robots on a 4’ x 8’ playing field in a regional tournament. All robots will be programmed to maneuver on the game board without the need for remote control. Botball teammates Taylor Gofstein, Jeffrey Sisler, Muller Gomes, J’Vaugn Johnson, and Edgar Cabrera will join Ashley in the competition.
The Botball workshop was sponsored by the KISS* Institute For Practical Robotics (KIPR). To learn more about Botball, please visit www.Botball.org. For more information about KIPR, visit www.kipr.org.
High Horizons and Multicultural Magnet Schools "Go Red"On February 1, the staff at High Horizons and Multicultural Magnet School participated in National Wear Red Day, sponsored by the American Heart Association. National Wear Red Day is a day when Americans nationwide wear red to show support for women’s heart disease awareness. This observance promotes the Red Dress, a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. The staff also made donations to the American Heart Association.
Jeanella Bentley, Physical Education teacher for both schools, organized the event. Annually, the students from these schools participate in the Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops For Heart programs, which are also sponsored by the American Heart Association. This year, these events will take place on February 11 and 13, respectively.
Mrs. Bentley extends a special thanks to Mrs. Melissa Jenkins, High Horizons Principal, and Mrs. Marina Perez-Taverner, Multicultural Magnet School Principal, for allowing their schools to volunteer their time to fighting heart disease.
